Your compensation is complex. Your October checklist does not have to be.
Priya, a senior cloud engineer, had four RSU vests and a bonus this year. Her pay stubs showed taxes withheld every time, so she assumed she was covered. In October, she ran the numbers and found a gap.
If your pay includes equity, here are the three wins that matter most right now.
Employers commonly withhold federal tax on RSUs and bonuses at a flat 22%. If your income puts you in the 32%, 35%, or 37% bracket, the difference may land as a balance due in April. The good news: W2 withholding is generally treated as paid evenly through the year, so a late year adjustment can still help.
Your move: Compare your year to date withholding to your projected tax. If there is a gap, update your W4 or make an estimated payment.
Every vest is a decision to hold your employer's stock. Your sale decisions shape this year's capital gains, and harvesting losses elsewhere may offset some of them. One caution: selling company stock at a loss within 30 days before or after a vest may trigger the wash sale rule and disallow the loss.
Your move: Pull your realized gains for the year and check your vest calendar before you sell anything at a loss.
Pretax 401(k) and HSA contributions may reduce this year's taxable income, but only for dollars contributed by year end. If your plan allows after tax contributions, that may be worth a look too.
Your move: Check your contributions against the 2026 limits and raise your percentage for the paychecks you have left.
Each win rests on four pillars: documentation that supports it, intent behind it, timing that respects the deadline, and structure that fits how you are paid. In October, timing is on your side. In April, it is not.
Depending on your circumstances, one of these wins may matter more than the others. A proactive review can help you find out which one before the year closes.
